Behind each photograph lies a story. Some convey happiness, some calmness, and some tell the story of sorrow. In some instances, photography can be used to raise awareness for unheard abuses of justice, while telling a story that goes beyond the headlines. This is shown in the work of the three nominees for the World Press Photo Story of the Year.
One of the nominees is Valery Melnikov, whose photo series of ten photographs, entitled “Paradise Lost,” portrays the aftermath of the 2020 Artsakh War that followed after the signing of the ceasefire agreement brokered by Russia. It shows the story of the Armenians of Artsakh and of their pain from losing their homes, lands, and hope.
The Center commends the 2021 World Press Photo Contest nominees that use their photographic skills to tell the stories of human rights violations.
Winners for the 2021 World Press Photo Contest will be announced on April 15, 2021.
